A Sulfur Cloud to Save Humanity

Climate change is here but we seem to be more willing than ever to ignore the issue. What this means is that we have run out of time to solve the crisis by conventional means. This leave unconventional solutions. The idea of using sulfur dioxide as a sun shield is actually an old idea. Here is a TED talk which examines the science and politics behind this idea.

  1. This climate problem seems to me to be so intractible (no one willing to make the required sacrifices) that I'm almost thinking we might as well "live today" and forget about tomorrow. Just as one example among many, I think the pipeline from Canada with the tar sands is, in my opinion, a very risky thing for the environment, but no doubt it will happen; we are not willing to cut back on our energy use so as to make this unnecessary. I read "No Impact Man" recently. The author, a Manhattan resident, vowed to do without electricity and such for one year while he wrote a book about it. He was committed, but once the year was up, he reverted to his regular lifestyle. The Christian Zionists think we are slated for Armageddon soon; perhaps that's just another way of accepting our laissez faire destruction of the planet.

  2. We have a problem even if everyone is willing to make the sacrifices. Sometime in the future the danger of global warming will become too apparent to deny. The question is will it be too late to do anything by then.
