How Obama Won

Jim Messina, Obama's campaign manager, revealed his strategy in this C-Span interview. Using information mined from the internet, they were able to use their ground forces more effectively, to offset Romney's money advantage. He also discloses the candidate they feared most if he had become the Republican nominee.

M... I watched this whole talk last night... fascinating stuff... I was particularly struck by Messina's words about the impact negatively of cell phones on polling, by skewing traditional samples. Before the 2008 election, I made about 100 phone calls for Obama in the very depressed, very Republican area north of Pittsburgh, and I was surprised by the high number of disconnects or otherwise dead numbers in the lists the campaign provided. My wife and I guessed then that conversion to cells was at least partly the cause. Now, what's interesting to me after hearing Messina is the fact that the campaign wanted complete replies to how each phone number responded, or didn't respond. Which means, I'm guessing, they updated those phone lists and/or made sure some doors were hit. Fascinating, the level of detail Messina described. Thanks for pointing this piece out. // Lowell
